On
Falling In And Out Of Storyside...
A
Daina-n-Jerry Story
Naomi
the Deft, sprite and professional nuisance extraordinaire, sat human sized in
front of Daina's computer gaining illicit information
on the rest of the world, as usual. Daina wasn't around, her little
"sister" Christine was in magic school the way all 7-year-old
pre-fairy empresses should be and Joshua, Christine's little brother, was
attempting to take a nap the way all 3-year-old little brothers should be, so
it seemed to be the perfect time to delve into Daina's
business.
Dee,
as Naomi called her, was into the random and sometimes detrimental creation of
pre-historical information in the Worlds According To
Daina, which all supposedly existed inside her head. In short, Daina wrote it
and it basically happened in her subconscious, although not always the way it
was supposed to. Not many knew that Daina had such control over their lives (or
even that their lives were really just a figment of a college girl's
imagination), but since Naomi was privy to such information, she had some say
in how her own story went. It meant her life stayed fairly stable in terms of
activity but that wasn't to say that everyone else that Daina had essentially
created (which was a lot of people) had the same good fortune. That
was what Naomi liked to tune in to.
She
plugged in the new password, "stayoutn"
(which stood for "stay out Naomi"), placed the pointer on the
"Future Complications" window, clicked the mouse and started reading.
A
half an hour later, she was confused and, strangely enough, even upset. She was
glad for the sprite kid, Mia, since her dad was finally home, but it looked
like both of them were bound to come upon some major trouble with some of the
head brass in the fairy capital Pyrope over, oddly
enough, trouble that Naomi was in. The worst part was neither of them would
have any idea what was going on. There wasn't enough of the story outline for
Naomi to know what she was in trouble for, or even what the outcome of the
story was to be.
Naomi
groaned irritably. She was used to having to deal with complications arising
from things she'd done ages ago when she'd lived in the fairy city of Pyrope, which was why she stayed with Daina now in
semi-hiding, being a sort of fulltime nanny for Christine and Joshua. It just
complicated things when people she knew had to get involved as well. She didn't
directly know Magbert, Mia’s long lost father, but
she definitely knew Mia from the time she'd saved the little runt from a witch
who collected sprites the way some hunters collected game trophies. She had,
unfortunately, taken a liking to the child, and, even more unfortunately, had
done it in front of Temille, Naomi's arch-enemy, whom
she'd also ended up saving. Temille had probably
alerted everyone in Pyrope to Naomi's resurfacing and
they'd now be trying to capture Mia to force her to tell where Naomi was hiding
out (not that anybody, especially the kid, even knew). Magbert
was her father, though and he was sure to have a little more than something to
say about fairies trying to pump his daughter for information.
The
situation was getting too complicated for Naomi and her self-preservationist
attitude. Duty dictated that she should warn the kid and her father of the
oncoming danger of being accosted by fairies, especially since they were really
out to get her instead, but common sense told her she should lay low. The more
she thought it over, however, the more she could see Mia's face after they
threw the basic fairy torture routine on her, beginning with a general magic
drain and ending with the victim wishing they had lost all their magic
so they would never have to feel such pain again.
With
a duty laden groan, Naomi got up to wake Joshua. Not like she could leave him
here while she popped off to get herself killed...
