The Sprite takes a break from boxing…!

9th Annual Western New York Letterbox Gathering

 WNY’s Lazy Summer 2011

(last updated August 16, 2011)

General Info: We’re returning to our “roots” this time, back to where the stamps for the first event the Highlander and I held were. Royalton Ravine County Park (also known as Victor A. Fitchlee Park) is just south of the canal town of Gasport in Niagara County. The day event will be on August 20th at Pavillion #4 and will go from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM. As usual, we’ll also have some night boxing at the same park around 8:15 PM, but since we don’t have as many Canadian or far Finger Lakes visitors this year, we’ll have no camping this time.

Directions: The park is just off Gasport Road, which you can get to from Route 77 or Route 31 in Niagara County. There are various ways to get there:

From the Thruway (east or west): Take the Pembroke Exit (48A) off the thruway and head north toward Medina. When you get to the flashing stop light in Alabama (about 7 miles up), turn left to follow Route 77. Again, follow this road until you reach the stoplight at Gasport Road. Turn right and the park will be on the left, about a mile and a half down.

From the Rochester area via Spencerport Expressway (Route 531): Take Route 531, which leads to Route 31/31A. If you STAY on 31A West out of Monroe County, THROUGH Orleans County and into Niagara County, you’ll finally hit a stoplight at Gasport Road (where the post office is). From here, turn LEFT and the park is down, then up the hill on the right.

From Niagara Falls: Take the Robert Morris Parkway north to Route 31 heading east. It’ll take you through Lockport and into Royalton through Lockport all the way to the light at Gasport Road. Turn right and the park down, then up the hill on the right.

From Amherst, Williamsville & North Buffalo suburbs: Take the 990 to Millersport Road, then turn left and take Millersport to Transit Road. Turn left on Transit and pass the drive in and a ton of car dealers to the light at Robinson Road (which becomes Dysinger). Turn left and follow the road to where it dead ends, then turn right. Follow the road just past where it branches off to the right for Akron Road, then turn LEFT onto Gasport Road. Drive about 2 miles down (which will take you past the stoplight at Route 77) and the park will be on the left, about a mile and a half past the light.

Event Schedule: We always try to maximize your boxing time, so the schedule is simple:

Saturday, 10:30 a.m.: Event begins. Come stamp into the event book, get the event stamps, exchange with other boxers and get some food. You can do this at ANY time between 10:30 and 4:30, but the food DOES run out and people will be in and out all day! IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A GATHERING, BE SURE TO COME AT THIS TIME SO WE CAN HAVE TIME TO MEET YOU AND HELP YOU GET ORIENTED! Also, feel free to check at AQ for tips on attending a gathering to help you out.

11:00-4:30pm: Boxing all over the park. You can also use this time to exchange at the pavilion or just talk to other folks in the area

4:30pm:  Group photo. Be sure to come back in time to get everyone in the shot so we’ve got something to share on the boards!

4:45pm: Raffle & Award time! Pay a $1 per ticket or $5 for an arm’s length and get a shot at winning some great boxing supplies or win a stamping award for the day!

5:00pm: Day event ends; clean up & head to dinner. Join up with the local folks for dinner at Friendly’s in Lockport or head home to relax.

8:30pm: Night boxing event. Since the park closes at 9, we have to start at dusk instead of nightfall, so be back at the pavilion at Royalton Ravine around this time. The park closes promptly at 9, so we’ll be picking the boxing up at 8:50. Don’t be LATE. Details on where to start will be given after the raffle.

Sunday, all day: Box on your own. Come back to get what boxes you missed!

Food: Like all gatherings, our bounty will be potluck, so bring your favorite dish and let us know what it is (so we don’t have too little or too much of anything!). We'll provide hotdogs and soda if you bring the side dishes!

Accommodations: The closest place to stay is Lockport, which has a few hotels right on Transit Road. There’s even a bed and breakfast on Route 31 not too far from the park and one right in Gasport as well. If you don’t mind staying just a little further away (or want a bigger hotel), you have the entire Buffalo/Niagara region at your disposal this year (which includes accommodations in Canada, for those with passports or enhanced licenses), which means TONS of boxes in the surrounding suburbs.

Boxes: Currently, there are no boxes at ALL in Four Mile itself, mostly because the paths are pretty open. Even the series we’ll be doing is just outside the park area, not directly in it. Clues for the boxes will be posted on our gathering clues page on Thursday the 18th, so no peeking until then. We’ll also have a booklet of the event clues to give out at the pavilion, but only until we run out, so don’t come too late. Our box theme is leisure activities, so let us know if you’d like to donate a box based on any of the ways people like to relax! More importantly, though, let us know if you want to donate raffle items! Any boxing supplies or fun items you can send to add to our list would really help make the whole thing worthwhile. Proceeds for this raffle will go toward the cost of the pavilion, the grill food and...well, other raffle items! :-).

Getting Around & Other Boxes: Check the event page at Atlas Quest. The list you’ll get is MORE than enough for one weekend! However, if you’re a severe boxer (or, The Phoenix!), the city to search is Gasport, NY.  The Highlander and I do a Hallowed Grounds tour yearly in different counties, one of which was Niagara County. You can also check for boxes in Niagara County on LBNA (Orleans, too, if you have more time to spend)!  On your way in, don't forget that any boxes in cities along the thruway (AQ will let you search I-90 specifically if you use the Trip Search on the Simple Search page!). Mapworks also sells an EXCELLENT map of Niagara & Orleans counties as well as Western New York areas. They have the best detail with all the little side streets and rabbit runs, so you might want to invest the 4 or 5 bucks on one at any Tops or Wilson Farms in that county.

Questions?: Let us know (the Sprite & the Highlander) if WE can be of more help. This is the eighth WNY gathering we’ve planned and we always strive for a relaxing weekend amongst friends. With this year’s theme, it should be even MORE relaxed! We’ll have our Cootie Catcher on the table for those wanting to get rid of cooties and traveling events stamps are always welcome! If you know of anyone else that's interested, please feel free to pass this info along and have them sign up on Atlas Quest! Hope to see you there!
