LBWNY’s Silver Screen Saturday Box Clues

At long last, the boxes are HERE! There are three basic areas to find all these boxes, one being the cross country ski loop near Campsites 1-29, another along the creek path (beginning fairly near the shelter and ending at the cross country ski loop, and the last being right near the playground and shelter we’re at (#3). If you have the stamina, we recommend doing these in the order you see them. If not (or you come back for these at a later time), we’ve listed ways to get back to the shelter or the other box sets in the park. Happy hunting!

Note: Unless otherwise stated, all these boxes are permanent placements, so don’t worry if you can’t get them all in one weekend…you’ve got the rest of your life (or until the muggles find them, whichever comes first!) The box donators’ trailnames are listed in parentheses right next to them, so be sure to thank these kind souls for providing you with this summer’s entertainment.

James Dean, Princess Leia’s Buns and Rocky Horror Series (5 Boxes)

1.      James Dean (Great Big Seabres)—Head over to the slide closest to our shelter. Put your back to the ladder and look into the underbrush. Two thin trees stand in front of you, but look to the right at the bigger one on the hill with the rocks under it. Climb in there and lift up the big flat rock at the base on the left.

2.      Princess Leia’s Buns (Wassamatta U)—Go back down and stand by the slide again. You should see a swing set nearby. Go to it and stand with your back to the end of the swings so that the slide is behind you and face another row of foliage. Look into this foliage about 8 feet in for 3 thin trees, 2 of which are in front of a bigger one. Look under rocks between the two thin and one bigger one to find out what Stormtroopers really dig!

3.      Rocky Horror Picture Show (Mouse)—Walk along the edge of the foliage back toward Shelter 3. Look for a large pile of cut logs for one with a red “LB” on it. Look under that log for a cult classic

4.      Time Warp (Mouse)—Head 22 steps along the foliage again (toward the shelter, not the playground area) to the evergreen tree. Check under two rocks for another aspect of the Rocky Horror phenomenon.

5.      Frankenfurter (Mouse)—Follow the foliage again until you’re across from the shelter. In the woods now is a HUGE tree with roots all gnarled down the back. Look around back on the right side (if your back is to the shelter) in the roots for Rocky Horror’s star…you’ll have to move some wood to find this one.

Getting back to the shelter or other box series:

To Shelter: Uh…turn around? J

To Movie Genres: Read on to the next set of clues!

To Science Fiction Double Feature, Jay & Silent Bob, The Black Knight & Searching For Bobby Fischer series: Go back to the main road again near the shelter. Put the shelter to your back and face the parking lot. You can either walk or drive along the main road to your left past the main park building and the extra playground. A road leads up on the right to the cross country ski trail and warming hut. Follow it to the end of the road and park by the hut, then follow the clues for the series below.

Movie Genre Series (17 boxes)

These boxes were carved and planted by your hosts, The Sprite and the Highlander. Start by walking toward the playground area of near Shelter #3. You’ll see a clearing that opens up to the main road and passes Shelter #4. Follow this road down toward the creek and you’ll see a tree on the right with an arrow on it, designating a path. Hop on this to get started. You may ALSO want to check the listing of “Other Boxes Within the Park” before going too far on this path. After we planted this series, we noticed some other boxes were in the same general area! Note: To save time, all the boxes in this series are in orange pill bottle containers with no logbook until the very last box. The last box is a Lock and Lock and has the logbook for the whole series. Also, this series tends to meander along the creek ridge area. Be mindful of the areas that are steeper and try to keep away from them!

1.      Science Fiction (The Sprite & the Highlander)—As you start the path, you’ll  see a large rotted stump on the right that probably once was a double trunked tree (or some strange forest alien!). About where the two trunks meet, move some bark to find the Science Fiction stamp..

2.      Horror (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Continue on the path past the orange fencing into the wooded area. On the left about 10-15 steps off the path, the ground raises into a very small hill. Start looking there for a half stump and twisted roots. Look for the biggest tree in that area under some rocks in the roots.

3.      Gangster (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Continue on the path again and you’ll enter a tall grass clearing. Most notable here is the fallen tree with the arrows carved into it showing you which way you could go. Below the arrows are some logs. Look along the edge of these logs closest to you under some bark.

4.      Teen (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Keep walking and the trees return to shade you once again. From where the grass stops and the trees begin again, take about 45 steps and look right again. The little hill/ridge is still there. Look for a tree with a main thigh sized trunk and 2-3 arm sized trunks coming off it. There are rocks at the base hiding what you seek.

5.      Musical (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Return again to the path and head to quite near the edge, where you’ll be just about to come out into a HUGE clearing. Look left again on the little hill for a tree that has a very green mossy root sticking out like a curved arm along the ground (there should be another tree with a big knob on it to the left if you’re in the right area). Go to the mossy tree and look on the right side in the roots under some rocks.

At this point, you could put your back to the creek and head left out of this clearing back to the shelter, or you could cross the clearing uphill past the playground and Shelter #2. Keep the creek to your left and you’ll eventually come upon more orange fencing and the entrance to the other side of this path.

6.      Epic (The Sprite & the Highlander)—From where the path starts up again, take 30 steps and look to the right. You’ll see what we thought looked like white elephant trunk roots on the hillside. Climb up to the 4 trunked tree (just above another tree that curves upward for the sun) and move some rocks around.

7.      Thriller (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Continue on the path and you’ll start to hear a little waterfall to your right and (depending on how much sun we get) a big puddle in your path. Go around this to where you can see a HUGE stump on the hillside with its roots growing around a large rock. Climb up a little to the rock itself a move a MUCH smaller rock to reveal your stamp location.

8.      War (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Follow the path again. It goes around a bend to the right, but as you round this bend and come uphill, you’ll see a path veering off to the lefts marked with a green and white Sprague Brook sign. (Note: If you want to go back to the shelter at this point, go STRAIGHT up the hill and follow the road to the RIGHT. You can do this at any point from here on this path, since the path parallels the road.) Follow this path now past 3 signs of this kind (including the first one you saw) and look to the left. A 7 trunked tree has what you see in its fork under a rock.

9.      Action/Adventure (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Stay on your current path and you’ll end up cresting a hill as you enter an evergreen forest where you can see the main park building through the trees on your right. Start looking on the left for a 4+ trunked tree next to an evergreen. You’ll know you’re in the right spot if you look to your right and see a tree with a Sprague Brook sign on the opposite side of it. Check the 4 trunk for the stamp.

10. Comedy (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Continue on the path past the pink ribboned tree with the Sprague Brook sign on the back. From here, take 10 steps and look to the left. A tree with a seam in the middle is here…move some bark in the seam to see something funny.

11. Romance (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Keep going until you see another Sprague Brook sign on the left (facing you this time). You’ll find a stump that has a bark tongue. Lift the tongue to find a little Romance.

12. Dark Comedy (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Follow the path out of the woods and cross the road to the other part of this path. Once you reach it, go 40 steps up the path, where it levels out a bit, then go into the foliage to the right about 10 steps. There is a stump of a tree about arm’s thickness sticking up out of the ground. It’s also split a little. Move some rocks from the split to reveal the stamp. Take the time to REALLY be sure this one is hidden properly when you’re done, since it’s in a very precarious locale.

13. Courtroom/Detective (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Follow this path up hill to the end just before the road and look for the multitrunked tree on the left. Check its fork for a little courtroom drama.

14. Fantasy (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Now cross the road (heading STRAIGHT, not downhill toward the playground). Once you cross, go about 27 steps and look in the foliage on the left for a tree that resembles a large tuning fork (or as K the Hunter said while we hid these, “a pair of pants”). It’s leaning against another tree so that it runs in between the two “legs”. Check the base of this tree.

15. Western (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Follow the road to the next clearing in the foliage on the left, which leads down to the camping loop below (you should be able to see the green sign for campsite #1 from here). Face that sign and to your right should be a tree on the right with trunks pressed EXTREMELY close together. Go around the back of this tree and look in the fork, where a rock covers this stamp.

16. The Heist (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Now cross the road through the big field to where the other foliage/tree line is. You should see another path designated by orange tree markers and reflectors. Head 40 steps uphill on the path and look to the left. A lone evergreen stands there with a 4 trunked maple. Check the maple’s roots for The Heist.

17. Film Noir (The Sprite & the Highlander)—Go back down to the road again and follow it up to the rust colored Warming Hut for the cross country ski trail. Put the hut to your back and backtrack along the foliage about 30 steps. You should see a multitrunked tree with rocks at the base. Move these for the final box in the series..

Getting back to the shelter or other box series:

To the Shelter or James Dean, Princess Leia’s Buns and Rocky Horror series: Head straight down the hill in front of you and get on the road at the bottom heading to the left. This will head all the way back to the shelter after about 15 minutes. You can also do this from the road you came in on (the road by the warming hut, just be sure when it dead ends, you turn left onto the main road.

To Science Fiction Double Feature, Jay & Silent Bob, The Black Knight & Searching For Bobby Fischer series: Go back to the main road again and turn left so that you go past the Warming Hut. From there, follow the directions for the series.

Science Fiction Double Feature, Jay & Silent Bob, and The Black Knight Series (13 boxes)

These boxes are all along the cross country and bike paths near the warming hut. Begin by finding the warming hut. From Shelter #3 at your back, turn left and follow the road (walk or drive)  past the main park building and the extra playground on the right until you see the road leading to the warming hut. You turn up this road and drive until it deadends. Park at the hut, then start on the cross country path. Before you go very far, you’ll see a path leading to the left down through the field toward a tree line hiding the creek ridge beyond.  This is where these clues begin (Note: All these boxes have their own logbooks and are in either Lock and Lock boxes or small brightly colored plastic bowls. Because these can be seen easily, remember to rehide better than you found!):

1.      When Worlds Collide (Mouse)—As you start the path, you’ll see a large tree with half a dead limb on the left and a log on the ground. Check the roots of the tree around the back.

2.      The Day The Earth Stood Still (Mouse)—Continue on the path past dead tree, then count 30 steps. You should see a mossy rock on the left. Go about 15 steps down the hill on the left and look to your right for a big flat rock against a tree. Move this for the stamp.

3.      Invisible Man (Mouse)—Continue on the path again and you’ll see a big dead log on the left leaning up against an improbably thin live tree. Check behind the log under a flat rock near the roots and this thin tree to expose the Invisible Man.

4.      King Kong (Mouse)—Keep walking and you’ll see the path meets up with the main crosscountry path. Get on that path now keep heading STRAIGHT on the path into the woods (not along side them where you’d stay at the edge of the field) . You should see an arrow on the first tree to the left. Look at the back of this tree in the roots.

5.      Day of the Triffids (Mouse)—Walk further in and stop at the stump below the tree with the big circle where a limb must have been. Look to the left oat the thigh sized tree with the bark peeling off if. Below is a huge perfect curl of bark hiding this stamp.

6.      Tarantula (Mouse)—Back on the path until you see a big tree with RC carved on it on your left. 10 steps from this you should look to your right. A tree with a small stump is there and behind it, a group of 3 trees together. Look in a hole about waist height for this spider.

7.      Jay (Mouse)—Continue on the path to the next arrow on the left. Look into the woods on the left and you’ll see a HUGE splinter stump. Go around to the right side of this stump and move some hunks of bark near the top of the stump for Jay.

8.      Silent Bob (Mouse)—Don’t move from this spot. Silent Bob is in this same stump, about waist height, below Jay.

9.      The Black Knight Body (Wassamatta U)—Get back on the main path and keep heading the same direction (left if the stump is at your back). Keep walking until the path reaches a “t”. Go a little further forward toward the park limit sign and look in the crook of the 4 trunked tree on the right.

10. The Black Knight Left Arm (Wassamatta U)—Back track to the “t” in the path. With the park limit sign at your back, take the “t” to the left. You’ll pass where the path merges with another path, then a park arrow before you should start looking for a 6-7 trunked tree on the left. Look in the trunk on the left side.

11. The Black Knight Right Arm (Wassamatta U)—Keep going on the path again and you’ll walk past a 4 ½ trunked tree with peeled bark on your right. Close to here on the path ahead to the left is a bunch of small cut logs near some small trees. Look at the base of the trees between them and the logs.

12. The Black Knight Left Leg(Wassamatta U)—Follow the path again to the next arrow on the left. To the left in the woods is a long fallen tree with old roots. Look under this tree near its middle.

13. The Black Knight Right Leg (Wassamatta U)—Continue on the path to the next arrow, then look for the stump on the left with the rock at the base. Move the rock.

Getting back to the shelter or other box series:

To the Searching for Bobby Fischer series: Simply need to backtrack up the path you just came down (staying to your left at the merges) until you reach the “T” in the path again. From here, go STRAIGHT and start with clue #1.

To the Shelter or any of the other series EXCEPT the Searching for Bobby Fischer series: You can back track as mentioned above and take the path to the LEFT at the “t” or continue on the path you’re on. Eventually, this path opens out again onto the field where you can head downhill to your car at the warming hut. Once there, then follow the road to the main road and turn left. This will lead you back past the main building to Shelter #3, where all the other series begin.

Searching For Bobby Fischer Series (6 boxes)

These boxes are also all along the cross country and bike paths, but begin further in the woods. If you were already on the previous clues for the Sci-Fi Double Feature, the Black Knight & Jay & Silent Bob, skip reading this and go right to clue #1. If you’re just coming up to this series, follow the cross country path straight up into the woods until you find the “t” and the “Park Limit” sign. Turn left on the first path, that forms the “t” not the second by the limit sign. (Note: All these boxes have their own logbooks and are in small brightly colored plastic bowls. Because these can be seen easily, remember to rehide better than you found!):

1.      Searching For Bobby Fischer: Rook (Mouse)—Find the first path arrow on the right, then look left. You’ll see a double trunked tree with a broken split (not sure why this description fit at the time, but that’s what I wrote down!). Look in the crook of this tree.

2.      Searching For Bobby Fischer: Pawn (Mouse)—Continue on the path to the next path arrow on the right and look left again. You should see a tree with 4 trunks, two big and two little. Look under rocks at its base.

3.      Searching For Bobby Fischer: King (Mouse)—Follow the path again until you find the next arrow on the LEFT (this should be near the culvert that goes under the path). Look in the woods to the right and down a little slope, you show see some huge, flat blocks of cement stacked on each other. Walk over to these and look up under the edge of the top one. This is angled a bit, so you might really need to get down low to see this.

4.      Searching For Bobby Fischer: Queen (Mouse)—Return to the path and you’ll see a smaller bike path to your left that goes over a little bridge. Follow this until you see a massive set of exposed roots on the right. This was too messy a hide, so we chose to go with the crook of the tree on the LEFT instead!

5.      Searching For Bobby Fischer: Knight (Mouse)—Walk some more until you pass UNDER a broken tree archway. Check the split in the trunk of this archway (you’ll have to move some wood to see it).

6.      Searching For Bobby Fischer: Bishop (Mouse)—Continue on the path again. On your left before you curve down to go to the bridge, there’s a HUGE 4 ½ trunked tree w/deadfall around it. Look in the back of this tree in the crook for the final box in the series.

Getting back to the shelter or other box series:

To the Shelter or any of the other series: Follow this path back out to where it meets up with the original main path you were on. You head right back down to the warming hut, then follow the road to the main road and turn left. This will lead you back past the main building to Shelter #3, where all the other series begin.

Other Boxes Within The Park (4 boxes)

These boxes are all along the road to Campsites 31-122, the road toward the left of Shelter 3. They were hidden by other boxers, so some may overlap a little with the series’ that we planted for the event (the Movie Genres series starts right near the first 3 boxes on this list):

1.      Riolu: Gotta Catchem All (King of Hyrule)— Enter the park from Foote Road, and follow the road to the left. As you continue on this road, you will pass a tennis court on your left. You will proceed down a small hill. Park off the road on the right side just before the road crosses over the creek. You will see picnic tables and a gravel parking area. Walk down to the creek. Facing the creek turn right and walk up the bank heading upstream. Look for a group of Hemlock trees on the right bank. (If you come to a tree fallen across the creek or an orange fence on the bank, you have gone too far.) Look into the woods along the right bank for a grouping of 3 small trees. Once you see this grouping, look to the left for a large tree where the roots are exposed as the bank has been washed away. Continue to look to the left of this large tree and roots to see another smaller tree with its roots exposed. In this root group you will find your prize. Remember Pokemon are tough to catch so look carefully. This box is a friend of "King of the Kongo Beat" which is lying nearby.

2.      King of the Kongo Beat (Cheese)— Enter the park from Foote Road and follow the road to the left. As you continue on this road, you will pass a tennis court on your left. You will proceed down a small hill. Park off the road on the right side just before the road crosses over the creek, you will see picnic tables and a gravel parking area. Walk down to the creek. Facing the creek turn right and walk up the bank heading upstream. Look for a group of Hemlock trees on the right bank. (If you come to a tree fallen across the creek or an orange fence on the bank, you have gone too far.) Look into the woods along the right bank for a grouping of three small trees, look left in the tree roots. The King will be keeping the beat.

3.        Journey to Jaws Jr. (Sharkboy)— Enter the park from Foote Road, and follow the road to the left. As you continue on this road, you will pass a tennis court on your left. You will proceed down a small hill and cross a bridge over a creek. The road begins to go uphill, continue until you come to the Veteran's Memorial. Park in the parking area for the Veteran's Memorial. Walk down the path for the memorial until you reach the fourth bench with the Navy plaque. Face the bench, walk straight past a group of Birch trees to the Oak tree. At the Oak tree, face the woods with your back against the Oak tree, walk straight into the woods and look for a giant rock. There lies Jaws Jr. ready to eat you!

4.      Chuck Norris Went Camping… (It’s Not So Bad)— After entering the park from Foote Rd., follow the road to your left. This will take you back to sites 31- 122. As you continue on this road , you will pass a tennis court on your left, go over the brook, continue up the road past a small lake, until you find a small gravel parking lot with two blue dumpsters. Park near the dumpsters. Stand facing the dumpsters. Turn 180 degrees. Walk towards the wooded area to your left (across the street). You will see a five trunked tree leaning very close to the ground. The box is hidden at the base of the tree under some rocks. Be sure to hide this box well!

Personal Travelers, Traveling Event Stamps & Other Boxes

Personal Travelers: A personal traveler (or PT for short) is just a personal letterbox that folks bring with them. It’s a great way to meet your fellow boxers and to pick up another stamp on the way. Most people usually have something special you have to say or do to get it, so be sure to check the people listed on the event page at Atlas Quest (or here for the night event) and see if they have something you need to say or do to get the stamp.  For example, to get one of ours (the Sprite & the Highlander), you only have to find one of us and say “You DO know what Sprite is made of, don’t you?”!

Traveling Event Stamps: These are stamps that go from gathering to gathering to get stamped into, so tons of people all over the US have logged into these. The ones that will be at our event are:

à        Triple Dog Dare by Wassamatta U

à        “The Four Seasons Traveling Event Stamp Series” - a traveling event stamp by The Sprite & the Highlander

à        WNY Blue Ribbon Event Stamp – earned for doing specific things by The Sprite & the Highlander

Year Round Local Boxes:  The closest boxes (ones within 5-6 miles) are listed here. However, be sure to check Atlas Quest or LBNA (Erie County or Wyoming County) for anything further:

à        A Series About Beer!—Genny by Chadams

à        The Lil Wishing Well by Chadams

à        The Haunted Forestry! by Szuchie

à        Save Our Planet Series by Sunny Girl and Hazel Horse

Mystery Boxes: Check Western NY region on the LBNA site or New York Mystery boxes at AQ for these! Remember, this is only a list of the New York mystery boxes, not where they are IN New York.
